AUGUSTA - Maine Speaker of the House Robert Nutting issued the following statement, upon the vote by the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee to hold LD 309 over to next session:
"I think the Committee made a prudent decision to hold this bill over. After much discussion with parties from all sides, it became apparent that some serious concerns needed to be addressed. In particular, a strong accusation has been levied that this bill was meant to interfere with negotiations between the Governor and the state employee unions. This couldn't be further from the truth, and the decision to hold this over until next session should make that 100% clear.
"In addition, representatives from the state employee unions have assured us that the involuntary garnishment of so-called 'Fair Share' fees is already subject to negotiation. The negotiation process that is beginning now will put that assertion to the test, and we will be better equipped to continue discussions about this once the next session begins."
