AUGUSTA - State Rep. David Burns has extended his thanks to Washington County businesses that helped make this year's Legislative Memorial Scholarship Auction a rousing success. The event, held March 16 at the Augusta Civic Center, netted $27,170, an increase of $3,606 over last year's proceeds.
Rep. Burns (R-Whiting) said four companies in his House district donated items for the auction. Bluebird Ranch restaurant in Machias donated a gift basket. Helen's restaurant, also of Machias, donated a gift certificate. Looks Gourmet Foods, of Whiting, provided a gift basket, as did Raye's Mustard, of Eastport.
"It is because of the generosity of businesses like these that the scholarship auction was such a big success," said Rep. Burns, a second-term legislator and House chair of the Government Oversight Committee. "The outpouring of support was very strong around the state and led to a near-record year for the auction. The Washington County businesses that helped out deserve our gratitude."
Each year, the Legislative Memorial Scholarship Committee awards 16 $1,000 scholarships, one to a student from each county. In addition, the committee donates $2,000 each to both the Stephen Gould and David Michaud scholarships, the former administered by the University of Maine Foundation and the latter by the Eagle Lake Mercy Association.
Rep. Burns' district includes Cutler, Eastport, Lubec, Machias, Machiasport, Roque Bluffs, Trescott and Whiting. ###
