For Immediate Release
AUGUSTA - State Rep. Stacey Guerin has been appointed to the high-profile Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, putting her in position to shape legislation on a range of issues, from snowmobiles to hunter safety.
"I'm very pleased to be selected for this committee," said Rep. Guerin (R-Glenburn), a first-term legislator. "I've had a lifetime interest in the outdoors. I had one of the first snowmobiles in my community, a 10-horsepower model from Sears and Roebuck that's now on display at the Cole Transportation Museum in Bangor.
"I began fishing as a toddler on the Kenduskeag Stream and have taught fly-fishing to fellow L.L. Bean employees," she said. "I'm a lifelong supporter of Maine's hunting heritage and I enjoy hunting with my son. I've also completed the Maine Guide's course and I am studying for the license."
Rep. Guerin said her major objective on the committee is working to restore Maine's deer herd and get a handle on coyote predation. "I look forward to working towards solutions to the issues surrounding Maine's fisheries, wildlife and natural resources," she said. "These all contribute significantly to the state's economy."
The Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee has jurisdiction over the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. It has legislative responsibility for inland fisheries and wildlife research and management; hunting; fishing; trapping; hunter safety; and fish hatcheries. It also oversees game wardens; guides; taxidermist licensing; ATVs; snowmobiles; watercraft registration and boater safety; and white water rafting.
All bills related to one or more of these issues will be directed to the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee, where the members will hold public hearings and work sessions before voting on the bills and forwarding them to the full House and Senate. The Maine Legislature has 16 joint standing committees, each composed of 13 members - three senators and 10 members of the House. Every committee has jurisdiction over clearly defined parts of state government.
Rep. Guerin, a former teacher and the mother of five children, holds a B.S. degree in elementary education from the University of Maine. Her House district includes Glenburn, Kenduskeag, Levant and part of Corinth. ###
