For Immediate Release
AUGUSTA -- State Rep. Alexander R. Willette has landed a high-profile committee assignment for a first-term legislator. He is serving on the Transportation Committee, putting him in position to influence legislation in a range of areas, from highway maintenance and bridge repair to railroads, airports and waterways.
"I'm delighted to be on this committee," said Rep. Willette (R-Mapleton). "It was my first choice. Aroostook County folks are impacted every day by the decisions made by the state in regards to our transportation system. Now that the state owns 241 miles of track in northern Maine, I will work hard to make sure that the railroad remains financially viable, to eliminate any risk of economic burden to the taxpayers.
"It is essential that we maintain and improve our transportation system to help us attract businesses, which in turn will help generate jobs," he added. "Only the private sector can provide Aroostook with quality jobs that can support families and help reinvigorate our economic landscape. And a good transportation infrastructure is vital to fostering that private sector growth."
The Maine Legislature has 16 bipartisan policy committees, which handle bills and issues that fall within their areas of jurisdiction. Each committee has 13 members - three senators and 10 representatives.
The Transportation Committee has jurisdiction over the Department of Transportation; the Bureau of Motor Vehicles; motor vehicle registration and license plates; driver's licenses; and the Maine Turnpike Authority. It also oversees the Highway Fund; transportation policy; aeronautics; highway and bridge construction and maintenance; highway safety; waterways; railroads; and motor vehicles and motor carriers.
Rep. Willette represents House District 7, which includes the 10 towns of Castle Hill, Chapman, Hammond, Littleton, Mapleton, Masardis, Monticello, Wade, Washburn and Oxbow Plantation and part of the city of Presque Isle. The district also includes the unorganized territory of Central Aroostook (including E Township).
Rep. Willette is a graduate of Presque Isle High School and is on schedule to graduate this spring from the University of Maine at Farmington. He is an Eagle Scout with Troop 170 in Mapleton and Troop 171 in Presque Isle. ###
