Rep. Dennis Keschl Takes Post on Appropriations Committee

AUGUSTA - State Rep. Dennis Keschl has taken up duty on the Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs in the new Legislature, a position that will give him an influential voice in shaping policy regarding state budgetary matters.

Rep. Keschl (R-Belgrade), a first-term legislator, said he is honored by his committee assignment. "It's a demanding committee that involves a lot of late nights and weekend work," he said. "But this committee is central to writing the next state budget, and it is involved in the major fiscal issues that our state faces. I understand the tough work that lies ahead, but I'm grateful for the opportunity to play a role in charting our economic future."

Rep. Keschl, a former Belgrade town manager, brings years of hands-on experience to his new position. He has served as the administrative director and director of technical analysis for the Maine Public Utilities Commission. He also has served as director of the Bureau of Air Quality Control at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

In addition, Rep. Keschl logged 31 years of military service in the Army and the Maine Air National Guard. He is Vietnam era veteran and was stationed in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He also served in other overseas contingency operations in the 1990s. During his military career, he worked in military intelligence and was commander of the aircraft maintenance squadron at the Maine Air National Guard base in Bangor. He also worked on antiterrorism issues at the headquarters of the Air National Guard base in Augusta. He has received numerous awards, including two Air Force Meritorious Service Awards and the Air Force Commendation Medal

The Maine Legislature has 16 joint standing committees, each composed of 13 members - three senators and 10 members of the House. Every committee oversees clearly defined parts of state government.

The Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs has jurisdiction over General Fund appropriations and general fiscal policy. Its responsibilities also include federal funds allocations, special revenue and block grant allocations, the Budget Stabilization Fund, bond issues; and financial evaluation of agencies of state government. The Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS) was recently added to the committee's portfolio.

Rep. Keschl represents House District 83, which includes Belgrade, Fayette, Manchester, Mount Vernon and Vienna.
