Rep. Peter Rioux Named to Transportation Committee

AUGUSTA -- State Rep. Peter Rioux has been appointed to the high-profile Transportation Committee, giving him an influential voice on an extensive range of issues, from road and bridge repair to railroads and license plates.

"I am pleased to be on the Transportation Committee," said Rep. Rioux (R-Winterport), a first-term legislator. "My hands-on experience in agriculture, forestry and construction has given me the insight to understand the transportation needs of our industries. Also, living and working in rural areas of Maine most of my life, I know how bad some of our secondary roads are and how those areas need better roads for economic development and expansion.

"My other transportation concerns," he said, "include identifying inefficiencies and redundancies and working to develop a long-range and sustainable approach to Maine's transportation needs. Our highway infrastructure is key to Maine's economy, and roads and bridges have been on the back burner for years. I'd like to see a greater portion of the state budget dedicated to highway maintenance, as used to be standard procedure."

The Transportation Committee has jurisdiction over the Department of Transportation; the Bureau of Motor Vehicles; motor vehicle registration and license plates; driver's licenses; and the Maine Turnpike Authority. It also oversees the Highway Fund; transportation policy; aeronautics; highway and bridge construction and maintenance; highway safety; waterways; railroads; and motor vehicles and motor carriers.

The Maine Legislature has 16 bipartisan policy committees, which handle bills and issues that fall within their areas of jurisdiction. Each committee has 13 members - three senators and 10 representatives.

Rep. Rioux was raised on a potato farm in Aroostook County and worked in construction and forestry before settling into the trade of clockmaker in his own small business. His House district includes Brooks, Jackson, Monroe, Swanville, Waldo and Winterport. ###
