For Immediate Release
AUGUSTA -- State Rep. Deb Sanderson has been assigned an unusually heavy workload for a first-term legislator. She will serve on two high-profile policy panels - the Committee on Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
"Serving on two committees will make for a very busy session," said Rep. Sanderson (R-Chelsea). "I'm honored to be on both of them. Criminal Justice is a fascinating field, and I'm hoping my work in long-term care and medical billing will help bring a new perspective to HHS from a provider's point of view."
The Health and Human Services Committee has one of the broadest jurisdictional charters in the Legislature. It oversees the huge Department of Health and Human Services; MaineCare, Medicaid, and Medicare Part D; children's welfare and mental health services; disease control; prescription drugs; social and rehabilitation services; substance abuse; mental health; disabilities; poverty, homelessness and public assistance.
The committee's purview also extends to home and community-based long-term care; aging, elderly and disability issues; medical use of marijuana; maternal and infant health; and nursing facilities and residential care.
The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee is another multi-faceted panel. It exercises jurisdiction over the Maine Criminal Code; the Department of Public Safety; the Department of Corrections; and law enforcement. Its other oversight responsibilities include driving infractions, fire safety and arson; firearms; concealed firearms permits; and the Maine Emergency Management Agency.
The Maine Legislature has 16 bipartisan policy committees, which handle bills and issues that fall within their areas of jurisdiction. Each committee has 13 members - three senators and 10 representatives.
Rep. Sanderson represents House District 52, which includes Chelsea, in Kennebec County; Washington, in Knox County; and part of Jefferson, Somerville and Whitefield, plus the unorganized territory of Hibberts Cove. ###
