Rep. Ellie Espling Named to Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee

AUGUSTA - State Rep. Ellie Espling has been appointed to the Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, putting her in position to shape legislation on a range of issues, from snowmobiles to hunter safety.

"I'm very pleased to be selected for this committee," said Rep. Espling (R-New Gloucester). "I am a native Mainer and my relatives have enjoyed the outdoors for generations while hunting, fishing and trapping. I look forward to working towards solutions to the issues surrounding Maine's fisheries, wildlife and natural resources. These all contribute significantly to the state's economy."

The Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee has jurisdiction over the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. It has legislative responsibility for inland fisheries and wildlife research and management; hunting; fishing; trapping; hunter safety; and fish hatcheries. It also oversees game wardens; guides; taxidermist licensing; ATVs; snowmobiles; watercraft registration and boater safety; and white water rafting.

All bills related to one or more of these issues will be directed to the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee, where the members will hold public hearings and work sessions before voting on the bills and forwarding them to the full House and Senate. The Maine Legislature has 16 joint standing committees, each composed of 13 members - three senators and 10 members of the House. Every committee has jurisdiction over clearly defined parts of state government.

Rep. Espling has served on the New Gloucester Budget Committee and is involved in her community through the Cancer Community Center as a Cancer Buddy Volunteer. She teaches classes in money management and budgeting and has started several small enterprises, including a home baking business and a house cleaning business.

Rep. Espling represents Durham, part of Lisbon and New Gloucester. She lives in New Gloucester with her husband, Steve Espling, and their four children. ###
