Rep. Beaulieu appointed Chair of Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee

AUGUSTA- State Rep. Mike Beaulieu has been named House chair of the Legislature's Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee, giving him an influential voice in a range of areas, from election law and veterans' programs to off-track betting. He also has been appointed to the Judiciary Committee, which deals with everything from criminal procedure to medical malpractice.

"Pulling double duty will make for a busy session, but I'm delighted to have this opportunity," said Rep. Beaulieu (R-Auburn). "The Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee will be very active this session with gambling issues and some high-profile bills to change our voting procedures. We have a group of fine legislators on the committee, and I'm looking forward to getting started."

Rep. Beaulieu brings strong experience to his new chairmanship post. This marks his second term on the panel, which was formerly called the Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee. State Sen. Nichi Farnham (R-Penobscot), a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, has been named as the Senate chair.

House Speaker Robert Nutting, who made the appointment, said Rep. Beaulieu brings a reputation for fairness to the job. "Mike Beaulieu is universally respected in the Legislature for his thoughtful consideration of the issues," he said. "We're fortunate to have legislators of his caliber. I have no doubt that he will run this important committee in an outstanding manner."

The Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee has jurisdiction over liquor laws; lottery; games of chance; harness racing; and off-track betting. It also oversees election laws;

campaign practices; campaign financing and the Maine Clean Election Act; voter registration; and initiatives and referenda. Additionally, it handles veterans' programs; Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management Services; Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations; and Maine National Guard.

Rep. Beaulieu, now in his third term, represents part of Auburn. ###
