Rep. Gary Knight to Chair Taxation Committee

AUGUSTA - State Rep. Gary Knight has been named House chair of the Taxation Committee, putting him in position to shape legislation on issues ranging from tax policy to municipal revenue sharing.

Rep. Knight (R-Livermore Falls), now in his third term, brings strong experience to his new post. He served on the Taxation panel during the last two Legislatures, and his educational and professional background provides a solid base of expertise. He holds a degree in economics from Colby College and an M.B.A. from the University of Southern Maine.

Rep. Knight also is a graduate of the School of Banking at Williams College and completed an executive banking program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a retired community banker.

House Speaker Robert Nutting named Rep. Knight to his chairmanship based on his command of the issues. "Gary Knight has an excellent grasp of tax policy and will do an outstanding job running this committee," the Speaker said. "He also has a keen interest in bringing down Maine's income tax rates to make the state more competitive and help build up our employment base."

Rep. Knight said he is honored by the new position. "This will be an active session when it comes to tax policy," he said. "I'm very much looking forward to getting started. We have an outstanding group of legislators on the committee."

Sen. David Trahan (R-Lincoln), who spearheaded last June's People's Veto repeal of a tax overhaul package, has been appointed Senate chair of the Taxation panel.

The Maine Legislature has 16 policy committees, each with three state senators and 10 representatives. Every committee deals with bills and issues under its purview. The Taxation Committee's jurisdiction includes the Bureau of Revenue Services and State Property Tax Review Board; taxes; tax exemptions and credits; Maine Residents Property Tax Program; property valuation and assessment; tax increment financing; municipal revenue sharing; taxation of unorganized territories; and tree growth and other current use tax issues.

Rep. Knight represents district 81, which includes Leeds, Livermore, Livermore Falls, and Wayne. ###
