Rep. Joan Nass to Chair Judiciary Committee

AUGUSTA- State Rep. Joan Nass has been named chair of the Legislature's Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary, putting her in position to influence a range of important issues, from property rights to family law.

Rep. Nass (R-Acton), serving her fourth term, brings extensive experience to her new post. She has been on the Judiciary panel during the last three terms, including service as the ranking Republican in the last Legislature. She also has served three terms on the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.

"I'm delighted to be chairing Judiciary, where I already have a long history," said Rep. Nass. "We have an excellent group of legislators on board, including Senator David Hastings, the Senate chair. We're all looking forward to getting started."

The appointment was made by House Speaker Robert Nutting, who said Rep. Nass has the integrity and sense of fairness essential to successful management of a committee. "Joan Nass has been a dedicated, conscientious and hard-working public servant ever since she arrived in the Legislature," he said. "She is familiar with the sorts of issues that come before this committee after spending six years there. I'm confident she will do an outstanding job."

The Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over the Office of the Attorney General; the Maine Human Rights Commission; the Uniform Commercial Code; and a broad range of related issues. The committee oversees the judicial system's organization and budget; the Maine Tort Claims Act; liability; and family and child law. It also handles adoption; legal services; attorneys; civil rights; human rights; probate law; and property rights.

Besides chairing the Judiciary panel, Rep. Nass also will serve on the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. That panel oversees the Department of Environmental Protection and deals with numerous related issues, such as air and water quality; natural resource protection; shoreland zoning; subdivisions and growth management; and general environmental policy.

Rep. Nass represents district 144, which includes Acton, part of Lebanon and part of Sanford. ###
