Rep. Windol Weaver to Chair Marine Resources Committee

AUGUSTA - State Rep. Windol Weaver has been named House chair of the Marine Resources Committee, putting him in position to shape legislation on issues ranging from aquaculture to fisheries management.

Rep. Weaver (R-York), now in his third term, brings strong experience to his new post. He served as the ranking Republican on the Marine Resources panel in the last Legislature.

"I'm honored to be named chair of the committee," said Rep. Weaver. "Our salt-water fisheries are a critical part of the Maine economy and the state's identity, and we all want to keep them in excellent condition. I learned quite a lot about the issues over the last two years, and I'm ready to go to work. I'm also pleased to have such a fine group of legislators on the committee."

State Sen. Lois Snowe-Mello (R-Androscoggin) is the Senate chair of the committee.

Rep. Weaver's appointment was made by House Speaker Robert Nutting. "Windol brings a solid base of knowledge and a cordial temperament to this job," he said. "He is a respected and well-liked legislator, and I expect him to do a superb job running this important committee."

The committee has jurisdiction over the Department of Marine Resources; commercial marine fisheries management, licensing and enforcement; marine fish species; diadromous fish; mollusks; crustaceans; seaweed; sea urchins; sea cucumbers; processing and sale of marine fish and shellfish; and aquaculture.

Rep. Weaver is a graduate of Texas A&M University and a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel. During the Vietnam War, he flew 524 combat missions. He has served on the York budget committee and on the York County budget committee. He also is an active member of the VFW and the American Legion.

The Maine Legislature has 16 committees that deal with bills and issues under their purview. Each committee has three senators and 10 representatives. ###
