In 1998, the Legislative Council authorized the first major renovation of the
State House in nearly 40 years. The renovations will address health and
safety issues and modernize the heating, ventilation, electrical and
telecommunication systems throughout the building, but in keeping with the 1910
era of the State House additions. State House renovations are in 4 phases,
3 or which are now completed: The North Wing work is nearly finished, with an estimated completion date of February 15, 2002. The cost for the renovations of the State House and underground connector are about $32 million, $19 million through a bond and the remainder through General Fund appropriations by the Legislature.
