Update from VSM Team: Increase SSA/VR Reimbursement.
Prior the VSM - Bend the Curve initiative, the SSA/VR Reimbursement program was reviewed to determine if there were ways to increase the income to the program. Two of us traveled to Vermont and learned of a new claim tracking program that had been developed and implemented by that state. The software helped Vermont to greatly increase their reimbursement. Although Maine's reimbursement tracking process was already computerized, we felt that the new program could help us increase the number of claims submitted, thereby increasing income to the program. One year ago, BRS purchased the software called Tracker and is currently using it to process claims for reimbursement. The Value Stream Mapping process was used as a tool to record all the steps in the process of submitting claims for reimbursement to SSA for the cost VR incurs in assisting clients to obtain and retain employment. These steps will be used to document this process.
Because the "Current State" is new, if we were to map a "Future State", it would be a virtually identical process. For this reason it has been suggested that there would be no "value added" to taking the time to map a future state at this time. Although there is no "metrics" to compare the pre and post states, there is data available on the number and amount of reimbursement from prior years that could be compared to future income to the program that can/and will be used as a measure of productivity of the new software and process.
I have copies of the Visio VSM and metrics that were performed on it, and will forward them to anyone who would like them. I believe this concludes the work of this Team.
