APPRENTICE: an individual working in an apprenticeable occupation who is at least 16 years old, has a high school diploma or GED, and has signed the Apprenticeship Agreement.

APPRENTICESHIP AGREEMENT: a written agreement laying out the terms of the Apprenticeship that is signed by the sponsor, Apprentice, and Director of Apprenticeship Standards. The agreement provides for the Apprentice's participation in a definite sequence of job training and for such related and supplemental instruction as may be determined necessary for the Apprentice to qualify as a journeyperson in a particular occupation.

APPRENTICEABLE OCCUPATION: a skilled trade that:

(1) Is typically learned practically through a structured program of supervised on-the-job training

(2) Is clearly identified and commonly recognized through an industry

(3) Involves specialized skills and knowledge that require a minimum number of hours as directed by statute of on-the-job work experience

(4) Requires related instruction to supplement on-the-job training

CANCELLATION: termination of the registration or approval status of a program at the request of the supervisor or sponsor. Cancellation also refers to the termination of an Apprenticeship agreement at the request of the Apprentice, supervisor, or sponsor.

JOURNEYPERSON: the skill level attained after an Apprentice’s productivity and proficiency have reached the level of skill specified by the work process and has also completed the number of hours required.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING: training that takes place on-the-job and in the context of an occupation and its commonly performed tasks.

RELATED INSTRUCTION: the theoretical component of Apprenticeship training, which may be obtained from classroom instruction, correspondence courses, and distance learning among others. Rrelated instruction is intended to reinforce on-the-job training.

SPONSOR: a firm, association, committee, or organization registered in the Maine Apprenticeship Program that is able and willing to train workers in all aspects of an apprenticeable occupation.

STANDARDS: specifications of the necessary occupational tasks and competencies in an Apprenticeship that are developed with industry input. Standards state the major work processes in a given occupation to be taught, the approximate number of hours that must be spent in each process, and provide a template for the educational component of an Apprenticeship.

TRADE/CRAFT: a line of skilled manual or mechanical work that is pursued as an occupation.

WORK PROCESS: a delineation of skills and competencies that the Apprentice is to learn and perform. When the Apprentice’s productivity and proficiency have reached the level of skill specified by the work process and has also completed the number of hours required, the Apprentice will have reached the journeyperson skill level.
