CareerCenter, SafetyWorks! and department updates available on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and email newsletters

AUGUSTA—The Department of Labor has set up several new media outlets, including social media accounts, to better connect jobseekers and employers to information about training, job fairs, tax credits and other programs.

“The Department of Labor is working hard to connect people with jobs and other training resources to make sure that they have the skills employers need,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “It is only natural that the department use current technology to reach employers, job seekers, veterans, young people and the many other people and organizations it serves where they are already active: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.”

CareerCenters post information on their Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. These include posts and updates about job fairs, employer recruitments, workshops, support groups for unemployed professionals, events targeted to such individuals as veterans or people with disabilities, and other items of interest relating to hiring and training.

SafetyWorks! posts information on its Facebook page about free classes on workplace safety and timely reminders to help keep workers safe. SafetyWorks! information is also shared through the department’s Twitter account, @maine_labor .

“Social media are playing a greater role in the job search and hiring process. It brings the relevant information people need for their business or their job search directly to them wherever they are. They don’t have to search for it, and they can get it on any device,” said Commissioner of Labor Jeanne Paquette. “We want our information to reach all of our customers in the format that is easiest to access and use.”

She added, “Because most of these services are free, they increase the effectiveness of our outreach at no extra cost to the taxpayer. I encourage all job seekers and businesses to connect with our services, including our new email newsletter for employers, and the social media formats that they prefer.”

The department issues various newsletters several time a year, including the bi-monthly newsletter for employers and a quarterly update for veterans. People can also sign up for notices about upcoming job fairs. The sign-up for all of these updates requires only an email address and is available on the Department of Labor’s homepage, http://www.maine.gov/labor/index.shtml . Look for the little red envelope icon and enter your email address.
