Burn Permits Service Details

Open Burning Permit online: $7.00 per permit. Burning permits that are issued from the local town warden are still free.

Permit Information:

  • All permits are issued may only be put to use between the hours of 5:00pm thru 9:00am because nearly 94% of all wildfires in Maine occur after 9:00 a.m. and before 5:00 p.m., when winds and
temperatures are generally at their highest levels and relative humidity is lower.
  • Permit restrictions have been set by the Maine Forest Service.
  • The class day, type and size of the burn will determine what the individual will be required to have at the burn.
  • All burning permits have display "burn tips" for the citizen.
  • Citizens are required to print the burning permit and have a copy with them when conducting the burn.

Town Wardens:

Town Wardens have a secure, password-protected Administrative site that provides the following functionality:

  • Edit Town Warden Information
  • Set Restrictions for their municipality
  • Enter Town Warden Notification Information to receive notices of online activity
  • Enter Unauthorized Users
  • Search for permits that have been issued through the online service

If you are a Town Warden and have not been provided with a user name and password to access the site, please contact the Maine Forest Service at (800) 750-9777 and they will assist you.
