OCLC Cat Express Guidelines

How to Enter Information into Cat Express

Cat Express bibliographic records, generated by Minerva participants who have joined the ad hoc Cat Express co-op,  are loaded daily.  In order for this data to load properly into Minerva, it must conform to these Guidelines
  1. Always place a legal five-character item location value in the 852a Location field, in lower-case.  Examples: lplrf, spbnf, tckst.
  2. Always place a legal item type value in the 852b field. Common values:
    • book 1
    • video 20>
    • audio 0
    • serial 17
    • Check the full item type list for other possibilities.
  3. If an item has a copy number greater than "1", place copy number in the 852j field.  Enter only the number. The system will supply "c." e.g. "4".
  4. Be sure to specify the proper MARC field for your call number, using the pulldown list:
    • 090a Local LC Call Number
    • 092a Local Dewey Call Number
    • 096a Local NLM Call Number
    • If you separate classification number and book number, put the latter in a subfield b.Do not use 852h (and optionally 852i) for call number.
  5. Place barcode in 852p.
  6. If an item requires a volume designation, use the 852c Shelving Location field.Examples: "Vol. 5", "v. 2", "V 12".
  7. If you have acquired 2 or more copies of a title, click the "Additional 852 Fields" link to create one 852 field for each copy.
  8. If you wish to record the item price, enter it in the 020c Price field.
  9. If you wish to enter an item level not for staff use, use the 852z Note field. Contrary to Cat Express labeling, this note is not public and will not appear in the Minerva OPA
  10. You may wish to review whether the customization of defaults that is possible in the new CORC interface may save you some keystrokes.
