Download Library: Next Generation OverDrive - Coming March 2013

The Maine InfoNet Download Library is scheduled to be migrated to OverDrive’s Next Generation digital library website (see a three minute video) on March 21. This will implement “One-Step Checkout,” OverDrive Read (browser-based eBooks), and many search and navigation improvements. This will not require any resources from your library as it uses the same URL and authentication method. Your new website will also carry forward your library’s logo, colors, subject collections, lending policies, and additional features.

Next Generation overview

The new website uses “responsive design” which allows the mobile and desktop experience to be the same—optimized for any size screen regardless of a user’s device.

OverDrive’s Next Generation digital library website also launches OverDrive Read, browser-based eBook reading. OverDrive Read is available for the majority of EPUB eBooks in your collection with no need to purchase an additional format. Next Generation still supports (and provides easier borrowing for) all currently compatible eBook and audio/video devices including Kindle in the US, Android, iPad and Nook. To see a live Next Generation library in action, visit CLEVNET (OH) (http://emedia.clevnet.org).

Beginning this week, there is a ‘Coming Soon’ promotional graphic in the left bar of the http://download.maineinfonet.org website to provide advanced notice of the switch-over to users. We’ve also created resources for you to promote that the Next Generation is coming soon:

Please note the following:

  1. The Next Generation digital library website makes use of web technologies such as HTML 5 and CSS 3, which are not supported by some versions of Internet Explorer. If a user has IE 7 installed,  they will be immediately prompted to complete a one-time install of the Google Chrome Frame plug-in. The plug-in is free and only takes a few seconds to install. Users of IE 8 & 9 will also be prompted to install the plug-in for use of OverDrive Read. Users may switch to another browser such as Firefox, Chrome, or Safari.
  2. The responsive website will show on all desktop and mobile modern web browsers. However, users browsing the site within the iOS mobile app will be directed to the existing mobile website with which your users are familiar. We are working to fix this exception as soon as possible.
  3. Updated marketing resources are available in the Next Generation Marketing Kit
  4. OverDrive has also created the following generic materials that libraries can use to let their constituents know about the change:
