Walkin Wireless logoPrevisit for a Walk-In-Wireless Setup Visit (Archived)

A setup visit usually begins with a discussion of configuration choices, the Agreement to Participate, and any questions or special considerations. Next comes inspection of the wide area network (usually MSLN) entrance equipment and a walking survey of the space where wireless connectivity is to be centered. The final step is to set up and configure the wireless access point in the vicinity of its final location and test it with the wireless notebook provided by the project. As time allows, assistance with installation and configuration of the several wireless client cards provided by the project will also be offered. If unforeseen problems arise, it may be necessary to make a second visit to complete configuration.

It is up to the local site to physically mount the access point on the wall or ceiling and provide electrical power to the access point, except that, where desired, MSL staff will assist in set up of a "power over ethernet" attachment that can delivery electric power to the Access Point via unused wires in the ethernet cable.

Collect Network Information

  • If your Internet provider is the Maine School and Library Network, look up and have ready your username and password for the MSLN network management tool.
  • If your Internet provider is not MSLN, identify a person with the ISP who can answer questions about your Internet service, and obtain a phone number at which this person can be reached by phone during the time of the visit.

Review Project Information

  • Look over the Agreement to Participate, which we will sign during the visit.
  • Review the Security Considerations so that questions and concerns can be quickly dealt with at the beginning of the visit and a decision on the preferred security setup can be arrived at without delay.
  • Look at the equipment information and prepare any questions you may have.
