Lynx - Snow Track Surveys

  • Since 1997, MDIFW and the Maine Natural Areas Program have been conducting surveys of rare plants, animals, and natural communities.
  • Between 1995 and 1999, IF&W conducting winter snow track surveys for lynx near the border of Maine and Quebec
      • Lynx tracks were found in 10 of 55 towns (18%) surveyed
      • Lynx tracks were found in 4 of 14 towns (29%) where spruce/fir forest was common
  • Between 2003 and 2008, MDIFW conducted systematic winter track surveys in northern and western Maine to document lynx distribution
      • Lynx tracks found in 34 of 70 towns (49%) surveyed
      • Lynx tracks found in 30 of 47 towns (64%) where young spruce/fir forest was common
  • Lynx may be present where tracks were not observed
