The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Bureau of Warden Service has, pursuant to MRSA 12, Section 10105 (4), a statutory responsibility to conduct searches for persons believed or presumed to be drowned in the inland waters of Maine. Due to the complexities and technical difficulty of conducting underwater searches for persons presumed drowned, the Maine Warden Service formed a special dive team in 1962 to accomplish this important mandated mission.
Since 1962, the Warden Service Dive Team has evolved into a specialized, well-trained and equipped team comprised of ten Wardens, one that serves as the Dive Team Administrator and one, which serves as the Dive Team Trainer. Dive operations occur primarily on the inland waters of the State. However, the team is often called to assist the Maine State Police and Maine Marine Patrol dive teams for victim recovery dive operations in salt water.
