Massachusetts Man Killed in Monday Morning Snowmobile Accident

Ashland, Maine – A 40-year-old Massachusetts man was killed at approximately 9:30 this morning in a single sled snowmobile accident in northern Aroostook County.

Philip Voisine, 40, of Danvers, Mass., was traveling with nine other snowmobilers on ITS 88 when the accident occurred, and was fourth or fifth in the line of sleds on the 13-foot-wide trail.

The friends had left the Ashland Motor Lodge, where they were staying, and traveled on ITS 85 then onto ITS 88. Mr. Voisine failed to negotiate a left turn and hit a tree, according to Maine Warden Service Sgt. Brian Gray.

Sgt. Gray said imprudent speed for existing conditions may have been a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Mr. Voisine, the father of an 11-year-old and a 2-year-old, was wearing a helmet. His family has been notified.

Mr. Voisine’s death is the ninth snowmobile fatality in Maine since Jan. 4., and the fifth fatality in less than 72 hours.
