Glenburn Teen Injured Putting Snowmobile in Garage

Augusta, Maine - A Glenburn teen suffered multiple pelvic fractures Monday night when he was attempting to put away his snowmobile in a garage.

Benjamin Bagley, 16, of Hudson Road, Glenburn, had been riding his sled on the fresh snow earlier in the day before parking the snowmobile in the driveway. Later in the evening, as he was attempting to move the sled into the garage, it accelerated and hit a tree, according to Game Warden Jim Fahey.

According to Fahey, Bagley said the sled’s throttle got stuck causing the acceleration, which was evidenced by tread tracks in the snow.

Bagley suffered multiple pelvic fractures and was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by Hudson Ambulance.

Bagley was not wearing a helmet, and under state law he only is required to wear one on state-financed trails.

This incident is an example to snowmobilers that safety precautions should take place in driveways as well as on trails, according to Fahey. “It’s always a good idea to wear a helmet, even on a short drive to park your sled,” Fahey said. “Also, if your sled has been parked outside for a period of time, check the throttle and brakes for ice or snow and clear it before operating the vehicle.”‬

Glenburn and Hudson volunteer firefighters and a Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office deputy also responded to the scene.
