Durham Teen Drowns While Swimming in Sewell Pond

Augusta, Maine - Jonathan M. Owens, 19, of Durham drowned this afternoon (June 21) while swimming with two friends in Sewell Pond in Arrowsic.

Mr. Owens and his friends, Ryan Dipierro, 21, of Westport, and Sean Quinn, 22, of Alna were attempting to swim 200 yards to a dock and got halfway when they decided to turn around and head back to shore, according to Warden Doug Kulis. Mr. Owens began to struggle and his friends attempted to help him.

The Maine Warden Service was notified at approximately 3:40 p.m. Maine State Police divers were called to assist. The divers recovered Mr. Owens from the 10-foot deep water, 30 feet from shore, at approximately 6:49 p.m.

Mr. Owens's family has been notified.

The incident is under investigation.

Two people have died on Maine's inland waters this year, and one person is missing.
