June 13, 2009 Morrill Man Dies in Fishing Incident Augusta, Maine - A 23-year-old Morrill man died last night (June 12) while fishing from a canoe with a friend on Cross Pond in Morrill. Jared Peterson, 23, of Morrill and his friend, Johnny Dayton, 23, of Belfast were fishing from a canoe in windy conditions when the canoe capsized at approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to Maine Warden Service Game Warden Aaron Cross. According to Warden Cross, Mr. Peterson told Mr. Dayton he could not swim. After a period of time, Mr. Peterson went under the water, and Mr. Dayton was able to swim to shore. Witnesses on the shore called 9-1-1. A search was initiated by six Game Wardens. The Maine Warden Service Dive Team and a Maine Warden Service Pilot also were called to the scene. MWS Pilot Dan Dufault located Mr. Peterson from the air in six feet of water at approximately 8:30 a.m. today, June 13. No life jackets were in the canoe. Alcohol was a likely contributing factor in the incident. Mr. Peterson was taken to Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home in Belfast. |
