Bangor Man Hurt in Snowmobile Accident

A 24-year-old Bangor man was injured at approximately 2 p.m. today when he fell off a quanzit hut at Ammo Industrial Park in Hampden.

Philip Smith III, 24, of Bangor drove his Arctic Cat snowmobile up the earthened side of the bunker-style building and was attempting to turn around on top of the structure when the incident occurred, according to Warden Dave Georgia. Mr. Smith fell approximately 15 feet off the building, landed on his head, and the snowmobile fell on top of him.

Mr. Smith was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He suffered a broken pelvis (in two spots), a broken left elbow, a lower spine injury, and bumps and abrasions.

Mr. Smith was wearing a helmet. He was snowmobiling with a friend, Travis Kepner, 21, (hometown not available), who was on a separate sled and was not injured.

The incident is under investigation.

The Hampden Police Department responded to the incident.
