Nephew Shoots Uncle in Leg While Hunting
A 40-year-old man was shot in the left thigh by his 19-year-old nephew today in Phillips while hunting with five other family members.
Craig Mitchell, 40, of Phillips, was shot at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the woods off of Old Bray Hill Road in Phillips by his nephew, Brian Mitchell of Phillips, who was using a 7400 Remington rifle. Brian Mitchell told the Maine Warden Service that he thought he was shooting at a deer, according to MWS Sgt. Rick Mills.
Craig Mitchell made it out of the woods on his own, and was first treated at Franklin Memorial Hospital before being transported to Central Maine Medical Center.
The incident remains under investigation. A report on the incident will be forwarded to the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office for review.
