IAC meeting - 4-25-06

Discussion regarding the 1% sales tax in the proposal:
-Leave in as an example of one way to fund the proposal
-Prepare examples tailored to each meeting (specific to area of presentation) (Joyce)
-Stress the property tax relief that will result
Postpone the summer public meetings?
- Brookings Institute to release results of research this fall, including analysis that might help the IAC
- beneficial to lay ground work this summer by speaking to interested parties (see list of groups below)
- Don’t want to be overshadowed by election, nor make this a campaign issue
- Interested parties might be upset if they are not approached before the public is
- Feedback from interested groups will help strengthen and validate issue in preparation for public presentations
- Can still present bill during the 123rd Legislature (hold hearings Nov-Feb)
Brookings Institute Study-
- Regarding how Maine is growing “A Blue Print for ME” (we should not use the same title)
- Includes suggestions on how to improve government and the services it provides
- The release of this information may help launch the IAC proposal
Review of the power point presentation
-Suggestions noted (see new version of the presentation)
Regarding the IAC:  low participation by members noted
- It is important to the success of the proposal that there is input from all areas
Breakdown of sales tax:
- Need to understand breakdown of the sales tax; refine proposal (what do we want to include?)
- Those numbers are on their way (Joyce)
