People: Maine’s Greatest Resource

The people of Maine are well-known for their work ethic, innovation, and generosity, and our reputation puts Maine at the front of the national stage. Mainers consistently and selflessly demonstrate their commitment to community spirit and cooperation. We've witnessed this on our own soil, during the Ice Storm of '98 and the York County floods of May 2006; at the national level, with the outpouring of resources and assistance for survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; and worldwide, where thousands of our troops are dedicated protectors of our freedoms. I believe the kindness of Mainers will always extend around the globe, just as it extends across the dinner table. And I am proud to have the opportunity to serve this great state.

  • When the federal government's Medicare Part D program failed thousands of seniors, we stepped in to ensure that no one left their pharmacy without their lifesaving medications. We worked hard to include immediate Administrative fixes and a $6 million appropriation to help our senior citizens through this confusing and difficult process.
  • We settled eleven years of back payments to hospitals left over by the previous administration so that our health care professionals are compensated for their invaluable work.
  • When the federal government failed to provide sufficient LIHEAP funding to keep Maine families warm this winter, we made the expedition of a $5 million state supplement to the LIHEAP program funding our first order of business, and we created the Keep ME Warm charitable fuel fund to raise additional funds. With the support of the Maine Legislature and the incredible generosity of the people of Maine, we were able to take care of some of our neighbors in greatest need.
  • With the enactment of LD 235, we rewarded hard work and workers by increasing the minimum wage. The increase, from $6.35 to $7.00 over two years, seeks to pay hardworking Mainers the livable wages they deserve.
