Office of Energy Independence and Security

The Governor created the Office of Energy Independence and Security in 2003. This Office monitors energy trends, provides information for consumers, and creates energy policies that enable the State of Maine to be a leader in energy conservation and efficiency. The Office also has worked to ensure that Maine State Government is a leader by example on sustainable energy practices, including the use of biodiesel to heat state offices, the adoption of LEED building standards, improved fuel economy and reduced travel for the state vehicle fleet, and energy efficiency improvements at state buildings.

Governor Baldacci is committed to an energy future for Maine that will be lower cost, less dependent on imported fossil fuels, cleaner, and better for the state's economy. That's why, in June 2006, Governor Baldacci signed his energy bill, LD LD 2041, An Act to Enhance Maine's Energy Independence and Security. In past sessions, the Governor has proposed and signed a solar rebate program, natural gas conservation programs, and a biofuel production tax credit.

The Governor's 2006 energy bill is the most comprehensive and progressive energy legislation that Maine has enacted in well over a decade. The bill will make Maine more energy independent, help to stabilize and reduce Maine homeowners' and businesses' energy bills, and help to address the looming threat of catastrophic global climate change through energy conservation, efficiency, and renewable energy.

The Governor's Office of Energy Independence and Security wants to empower the citizens of Maine by providing them with resources to make smart energy choices. Learn more about how you can participate in energy conservation by visiting www.efficiencymaine.com and www.maineenergyinfo.com.
