Landcover PartnershipThe Maine Landcover Dataset (MELCD 2004) project provides updated landcover and imperviousness data for Maine based on 2004 satellite imagery. Currently, the most recent such data for Maine is based on 13-year old imagery and is at a very coarse resolution of 30 meters. The new project provides current data at a higher resolution of 5 meters, and is tightly integrated with federal landcover mapping projects. In addition, imperviousness data are developed at a 5-meter resolution as well. The project was started in February of 2004. To date, the 2004 satellite imagery (5-meter SPOT-5 data) have been collected and are available to federal, state, and local governments in Maine, and public schools in Maine. The 5-meter imperviousness data are also completed to a 90% accuracy level, and are available to the public from http://megis.maine.gov/catalog . The 5-meter landcover data should be completed by January and will also be available to the public. The federal products, all at a coarser 30-meter resolution from 2001 LandSat data, include imperviousness, forested canopy closure, change detection (1995-2001), and landcover. The federal products will be available by January from the MRLC web site http://www.mrlc.gov/mrlc2k_nlcd.asp . This project is funded by a joint consortium of federal and state agencies and the Maine GeoLibrary Board. For further questions, contact Michael Smith at Maine Office of GIS. |
