Geo Portal

Try it out:

http://geolibportal.maine.gov

  1. A primary service of the Maine GeoLibrary Board is the implementation of a Geographic Portal to provide registration, discovery and access to internet-accessible Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that provide geospatially referenced data, maps, and geospatially-enabled applications. It will automatically harvest FGDC compliant metadata . The Board is comprised of stakeholders that represent the needs of all Maine citizens, governments, academic institutions, industry, NGO's, and others.
  2. The Maine GeoLibrary Portal is a central piece of the Maine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) which follows the standards and guidelines of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).
  3. Users will be able to manually enter/create metadata using Web forms, or upload XML files containing metadata to the Portal. The Portal shall employ Catalog Services and shall provide a common mechanism to classify, register, describe, search, maintain and access information about Distributed Geospatial Resources.
  4. This will enable users to type in a word such as wetlands and find a description of all data and services registered with the portal on wetlands. Users will be able to view the data if a web mapping service (WMS) exists. They will be able to download the data if they choose.
  5. The Portal will enable the upload of shape files which will be stored in an open source database and a WMS will be created on the fly and displayed in the Portal map viewer. This will enable Maine citizens, local governments, academic institutions, industry, NGO's, and others who do not have web servers to provide their geographic data for viewing and download.
  6. The Portal will enable clip, zip functionality. When a user is viewing data this function will enable them to download only the data that is in the viewing area. The Portal will have a separate area where users may download entire datasets.
  7. The Portal has a significant amount of additional functionality that will be available, this list is a summary of some of most important functions.

The Portal is being developed in stages:

The first stage is expected to be on-line by the end of June, 2008, items 1-4.

The second stage is expected to be completed in the Winter of 2008, items 5-6.
