Limited English Proficiency

 

1. Are there language minority students attending this school? How are they identified? Are any of those students limited English proficient? If students are L.E.P., how does the vocational program accommodate them?

2. Do the students receive assistance in learning English from a special teacher?

3. Does that teacher have E.S.L. endorsement? If not, is the person providing instruction being supervised by an ESL endorsed teacher? If the E.S.L. services are being provided by a paraprofessional, how does the district ensure that this educator is receiving training in E.S.L.?

4. Describe the language related services available to limited English proficient students in vocational programs.

5. What support services do these students receive?

6. How are these students, their parents, and the community made aware of these vocational programs and the special services offered?

7. Does the school provide notices and other pertinent information to parents who are L.E.P. in a language they comprehend?

8. Do these students have an equal opportunity to attend all vocational courses offered by the school?

9. Does the district (or "feeder schools") have a Lau Plan? How was it developed? Were the parents involved?

10. Does the school have a Lau Plan that includes entrance and exit criteria for L.E.P. youth?

11. How does the counseling staff accommodate the needs of language minority-L.E.P. students?

12. How do the mainstream teachers accommodate language minority-L.E.P. students?

13. If E.S.L. services take place outside the mainstream classroom, in what room(s) are they provided? Are these instructional spaces used for comparable classes for other non-L.E.P. students?

14. How does the school assess L.E.P. children for G/T and special education services?

15. Do the E.S.L. services take place during the school hours?

16. Have L.E.P. students been refused or discouraged admission to any vocational program in the last three years? If so, on what basis?

17. What procedure does the district use if an L.E.P. student's parents refuse E.S.L. services?

Review the district's Lau plans to ensure that they were individually developed and approved by the school committee.

Review the Department's most recent report on L.E.P. incidence for demographics on this district's language minority population and corresponding services.
