GEARThe Place where Gaining Empowerment Allows Results GEAR is a statewide parent run program of Crisis and Counseling Centers Inc. Gear exists to provide opportunity for contact between parents to prevent isolation and share knowledge gained by parenting a child with special needs.  All GEAR parent representatives have the experience of loving and caring for a child with special needs. They know the importance of having someone to talk to who understands what life can be like surrounding issues at home, in the community and at school. NAMI Maine, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Maine, is a membership organization with over 550 members.  People join NAMI Maine because they want to improve the quality of life for people living with mental illness. Members receive the NAMI Maine Newsletter, FAMILY, NAMI National's magazine, The Advocate, the Family Resource Guidebook, and training opportunities.  NAMI Maine is a non-profit, organization with over 20 family and consumer support groups, whose members work locally to help people cope more easily with mental illness - their own or their family members.  NAMI Maine offers the following services:  Advocacy, education, child and family services, family to family education course, support groups, respite program, lending library, family resource guide book, NIMH Outreach Partner; and Criminal Justice.

We here in Maine (DOE, the USM ASL/English Interpreter Training Program, our specialist in ITV and ATM (at both USM and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf), outreach personnel at the State school for deaf children, and numerous service providers, including VR counselors and special education specialists and cued speech specialist are currently already networked in an effort to achieve these priorities at the State level in coordination with regional efforts underway at Northeastern University in Boston.  Maine presents a microcosm of the rural interpreter needs we see reflected on a national scale.

Statewide system for coordinating programs and policies related to school-to-community transition for individuals with disabilities, ages 14-26.  This system provides resources and technical support for the development of quality transition programs which meet the intent of federal and state law, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1990.  Services include: identification of individuals with disabilities in transition from school to community; technical assistance for student education and transition plan development and implementation; information and referral; parent and student support; and facilitation of interagency communication and collaboration.  Regional and local projects are funded to coordinate existing transition resources and/or to plan and deliver services where needs are unmet.  A five-year Federal project funds additional training activities, local discretionary projects, and technical assistance to schools and other organizations on transition issues.

The Pine Tree Society provides direct service programs statewide to people with disabilities.  Services and programs that are provided by the Society include: Augmentative Communication Assistive Technology, which is committed to providing Maine children and adults with disabilities access to augmentative and alternative communication and assistive learning systems to help them create better lives for themselves and their families; the Kids' Project which provides affordable adaptive equipment for children with special needs and Pine Tree Camp which provides a wonderful summer camp experience for children and adults with disabilities.

The Rural Schools Partnership (RSP) is a collaborative designed to help its member school districts attain common goals through sharing resources and other organizational strategies.  RSP's primarily provides high quality, affordable professional development opportunities that forward members' educational priorities and improve learning for students. Nine small rural districts in the greater Bangor area compose the Partnership: SAD #23 (Carmel, Levant), SAD #28 (Etna, Dixmont), SAD #48 (Newport, Corinna, Hartland, Palmyra, St. Albans and Plymouth), SAD #63 (Holden, Eddington, Clifton), SAD #64 (Corinth, Bradford, Hudson, Kenduskeag, Stetson), Airline CSD, Dedham, Glenburn and Hermon. Altogether, the Partnership includes 26 schools in 24 communities, serving more than 250 educators and over 6,000 students.
