A Day with Debbie Diller
Supporting Reading Achievement through Small Group Differentiated Instruction and Literacy Station Practice

Maine Reading First is pleased to sponsor a daylong workshop with nationally known educator and author Debbie Diller in two different locations in Maine.  Participants will learn how to differentiate small group reading instruction in K-3 classrooms using both assessment information and appropriate expectations for reading development.  She will model instructional strategies to utilize during small group instruction and describe how to plan for instruction.  Additionally, she will help participants learn how to employ productive literacy work stations that will engage students in independent practice while small group instruction is taking place.

Debbie Diller has 30 years of experience teaching reading at the PrK-10 levels.  She has spent the past 15 years sharing her knowledge and skills with other educators throughout the United States.  Her expertise is in the design of engaging and meaningful whole group, small group, and independent work that meets the needs of all students.  Debbie is the author of the texts Literacy work Stations, Practice with Purpose, Making the Most of Small Groups, and of the video set Launching Literacy Stations.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone who works at the K-3 level, and teachers who work with struggling readers in the upper elementary grades will find it helpful as well.  The workshop will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 from 9-3 p.m. at Verrillos’ in Portland and repeated on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.  The registration cost for this workshop is $50 per person. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, as the number of people accepted to attend at each location will be limited to 200.  The registration deadline is July 25, 2008.   Purchase orders will be accepted.  Please complete the attached registration form and mail it with payment to Debbie Violette, 23 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333.  If you have any questions, please contact Lee Anne Larsen (LeeAnn.Larsen@maine.gov).
