2011-12 Literacy Leaders' Network Invitation

On behalf of the Maine Department of Education (MDOE), we are sending you this invitation to
participate in the 2011-12 Literacy Leaders' Network (LLN). This network, formed in 2007,
provides opportunities for Maine educators who work at the K-6 level and who are interested
literacy related instruction and assessment topics to network with colleagues across the State. The
LLN provides educators with opportunities to:
- Network and share ideas with other literacy leaders/educators
- Dialogue about common literacy topics and issues
- Engage in professional development
- Learn about literacy initiatives available to Maine educators
- Collaborate with a community of other literacy leaders
In essence, the network is a professional learning community with literacy as its central topic. Like previous years, the LLN meetings will be held in a variety of sites located regionally across Maine. LLN meetings will be held from 4:005:30 p.m. at the following locations on the stated dates (snow dates are provided in parentheses):

Based on feedback from last year, several topics will be considered during LLN meetings in the
coming year, including aspects of the Common Core Standards for ELA, writing instruction, and
content area literacy strategies. Participants will be able to select a professional text related to one
of these topics for text-based discussion, and facilitators at each site will assist participants with
learning-focused protocols to expand educators' knowledge of this year's selected topics. Time will
also be provided for participants to engage in informal networking, and snacks will be provided. In
March or April, participants will have the opportunity to network with educators from other
regionally located sites at a Spring Gathering in Lewiston, Bangor, or Presque Isle.

Then, complete the attached registration form and return it with the $40 registration fee.
Registrations must be received by September 26, 2011. You will receive an email confirmation
