A Case Study for SAT® Readiness

A high school or district concerned about the SAT scores its students receive needs to be committed to providing support and guidance to all students involved in the school or district.  A medium-sized, suburban high school in New England is using the following practices to implement an SAT preparation program for its students.  Partnering with the College Board, the high school has made use of the various College Board SAT Readiness Program™ resources not only to prepare students for the SAT, but also to achieve academic success, equity, and access goals for the entire school population.  Listed below are a number of resources and best practices that this school is currently using.  This case study is provided solely as an illustration of how one school implemented and SAT preparation program and each school should choose an implementation approach that's best for that school.

Official SAT Online Course™:

  • The district purchased the Official SAT Online Course for use with all of its juniors and sophomores, but freshman and seniors have access, as well.

  • During a half-day professional development time, all sophomore and junior English and math teachers received an overview of the SAT changes, and then received an introduction to the Official SAT Online Course.

  • The district leadership and high school principal held firm to the expectation that teachers would use the course throughout the year in their classes to maximize exposure to the critical reading, writing, and math skills that students need to have for college success.

  • English and math department teachers discussed the Official SAT Online Course content and came up with a timeframe of when various lessons in the course should be taught.

  • Students were assigned lessons, quizzes, and homework as part of their sophomore and junior English and math classes.  Teachers monitored student progress online.

  • A faculty member was designated as the school coordinator for the Official SAT Online Course, so that both students and teachers have access to someone who can help them with any technical questions that may arise.
