Start Status Codes and Explanations

01 New to educational system This indicates that student has never attended any instructional education. In most cases it would be used for pre-K or Kindergarten students. It could also be used for immigrants who never attended school anywhere before NO
02 Continuous in same school w/ no interruption This indicates that the student was enrolled in the previous year in the same school as the current school year. NO
10 Grade reassignment within same school in the same school year This indicates that the student was assigned to a new grade level within the current school year. The first enrollment would need to be ended with an exit code 99 before this enrollment is created. This status is only to be used during an existing school year where the student was demoted or promoted during an existing school year for the same school. This start status should never be used at the start of a school year. NO
11 Transfer from public school in same SAU This indicates that the student attended a public school within the same School Administrative Unit in the previous school year or during the current school year with no interruption between the two enrollments. YES
12 Transfer from a correctional facility, medical institution or hospital This start status should only be used when the previous exit status was a code 11 (Transfer to an Institution) or a code 18 (Illness). This start status transfers the student back from the Correctional Facility or hospital.  YES
13 Transfer from a public school in different SAU This indicates that the student attended a Maine public school outside this School Administrative Unit in the previous school year or during the current school year with no interruption between the two enrollments. YES
14 Transfer from a different state/country This indicates that the student attended a public or private school outside the State of Maine in the previous school year or during the current school year with no interruption between the two enrollments. YES
15 Transfer from an approved Maine private school This indicates that the student attended an approved private school within the State of Maine in the previous school year or during the current school year with no interruption between the two enrollments. The list of approved Maine private schools may be found here:http://maine.gov/doe/schools/directories.html YES
16 Transfer from home-based education This indicates that the student attended an approved home school program within the State of Maine in the previous school year or during the current school year with no interruption between the two enrollments. Home school students who enroll only for specific classes and are still deemed home school students should always be exited back to home school (exit code 13) at the end of the school year. YES
17 Transfer from Maine high school equivalency program This indicates that the student attended a Maine high school equivalency program within the State of Maine in the previous school year or during the current school year with no interruption between the two enrollments. YES
18 Transfer from a Public Charter School This indicates that the student attended a public Charter School in the previous school year or during the current school year with no interruption between the two enrollments. YES
30 Re-entry into Elementary School after having withdrawn. This indicates that the student reentered a Maine school in grades pre-K though grade 8 after having previously withdrawn. NO
40 Re-entry into High School after dropping out from same school This indicates that the student reentered the same school that the student had been previously been counted as a dropout. This code should only used for students in grades 9 through 12. NO
41 Re-entry into High School after dropping out from different school This indicates that the student reentered a school and that the student had been previously counted as a dropout for a different Maine school. This code should only used for students in grades 9 through 12. YES
50 Re-entry after expulsion from same Maine school This indicates that the student reentered the same school that the student had been previously expelled NO
51 Re-entry after expulsion from different Maine school This indicates that the student reentered a school and that the student had been previously expelled from a different Maine school YES
