Service Learning Celebration

Show, Share, Celebrate!

Hall of Flags, State Capitol, Augusta, Maine

April 15, 2008, 9:00 am to 12:30 pm

On April 15, 2008 the Maine DOE will host the 8th Annual Service Learning Exhibition at the Hall of Flags in the State Capitol in Augusta.  This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to see the State Capitol, familiarize state legislators with this kind of learning, and share and celebrate their work with other Service Learning students and teachers.

All Maine schools with whom the DOE and KIDS Consortium work may send a maximum of 4 people, including adults.  You will have half of an 8’ banquet table for their display.  We will provide brown bag lunches for all participants.

Remember to:

  1. Register by completing the attached reservation form by March 21, 2008 and sending it back to: glenn.nerbak@maine.gov or charlie.hartman@maine.gov
  1. Bring 25 copies of a completed Service Learning project brief (attached and on updated DOE website, www.maine.gov/lsa/slc.htm) AND send us an electronic copy, too!!
  1. Watch and discuss the video, "How to Talk to Your Legislator about Service Learning" (see below.)  Prepare a short informational presentation using the suggestions from the video.
  1. Get your local legislator involved:
    • Invite local legislators to school to see Service Learning in action!   Information about your legislators can be found at http://janus.state.me.us/legis/contact.htm
    • Call or e-mail them as soon as possible to invite them to see your exhibit on April 15.
    • Set up an appointment sometime during the day to visit their offices to talk about your Service Learning experiences.
    • Invite them to join you for the awards ceremony at about 11:15 (more definite time to come)

Haven’t yet finished a project?  Please feel free to create an “in-progress” display and fill out a KIDS Project Brief (attached). Please email us the Project Brief along with your registration form.

Video:  A few years ago, KIDS Consortium worked with Kay Rand, then Governor King’s Chief of Staff; State Senator Peggy Rotondo; and State Representative Glenn Cummings (now Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives) to create a video for students called "How to Talk to Your Legislator about Service Learning."  Over the years, each district that sent a group to the Hall of Flags received a video. If your school has not received one or needs another one, please contact Glenn Nerbak or Charlie Hartman.

Registration:  Please complete the attached reservation form and send it by March 21, 2008 to:

Glenn Nerbak (glenn.nerbak@maine.gov) or Charlie Hartman (charlie.hartman@maine.gov)

More details to come!
