National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)-The National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. Since 1911, NCTE has provided a forum for the profession, an array of opportunities for teachers to continue their professional growth throughout their careers, and a framework for cooperation to deal with issues that affect the teaching of English. Among the resources available on the NCTE website are publications such as the national standards document-Standards for the English Language Art andresources and services on a variety of topics including literacy coaching and adolescent literacy. http://www.ncte.org


New England Association of Teachers of English (NEATE)
- NEATE is an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) among the services this organization provides are: providing opportunity for study and discussion of problems which confront English language arts teachers; circulating information and resource materials regarding English language arts to teachers, librarians, administrators, and the general public; sponsoring conferences and meetings to promote improving instruction and sharing expertise; and  publishing articles, reports, and research relevant to New England English language arts teachers  http://www.neate.org

The Maine Writing Project (MWP) was established within the College of Education and Human Development in 1998 as an affiliate of the National Writing Project. It is dedicated to the improvement of the teaching and learning of writing across the curriculum at all grade levels. http://www.umaine.edu/edhd/mwp/

International Reading Association (IRA)- The International Reading Association seeks to promote high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction through studying the reading process and teaching techniques; serving as a clearinghouse for dissemination of reading research through conferences, journals, and other publications; and actively encouraging a lifetime reading habit. Among the resources available on the IRA website are publications and a link to a rich source of lesson plans at the IRA/NCTE http://www.readwritethink.org. New England Reading Association (NERA)- The New England Reading Association is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to engage in the following activities: promote and support the improvement of reading on local, state, and regional levels; support quality and effective reading/language arts instruction; disseminate information of ideas, pertinent research, practices, and strategies; and foster the opportunity for networking. http://www.nereading.org


Maine Reading Association (MRA)- The Maine Reading Association’s mission is to facilitate opportunities for all persons to be lifelong learners who use literacy for a variety of purposes; to encourage professional growth and literacy development through current research and information; and to support a lifetime love of reading and writing. http://www.mainereading.org


21st Century Learning
- Since 2002, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills has been working with states and communities to reinvigorate learning to meet the demands of the 21st century. Maine is among six states working with the Partnership for 21st Century Skills to implement a successful 21st Century Skills Initiative. To help education leaders and policymakers implement 21st century teaching and learning, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills launched Route 21, an online, one-stop shop for 21st century skills-related information, resources and tools. American Diploma Project (ADP)- Achieve, Inc. is an organization created by the nation’s governors and business leaders to help states raise academic standards and achievement so that all students graduate from high school ready for success in college and in the workplace.  Currently, 30 states, including Maine, have joined with Achieve to form the American Diploma Network, a coalition of states committed to aligning high school standards, assessments, graduation requirements and accountability systems with the demands of college and the workplace.  The Achieve website includes state status reports, ADP benchmarks, samples of college and workplace tasks, and other related information.  Find ADP at http://www.achieve.org/

The National Commission on Writing (NCW)– The NCW was established in 2002 and focuses national attention on the teaching and learning of writing.  Reports from the NCW include Writing: A Ticket to Work . . .
