Joel Stanley II was selected at the AWS-SkillsUSA Open Weld Trials. He is from Medway, ME and represented the United States in the Welding competition of the 38th World Skills Competition in Helsinki, Finland, May 26-29, 2005. Stanley, 22, attends Northern Penobscot Tech Center, Region III, in the evening and works fulltime at Fastco Corporation in Lincoln. "I'm just totally excited to be going to Helsinki," said Stanley. "I'm looking forward to going over there and competing internationally. I'll use the next few weeks of my time here to hone my skills and practice for the competition."
Post World Skills Competitions results have Joel Stanley taking a diploma of honor in Welding with a score of 521 points. Diplomas are awarded to contestants who score over 500 points out of a possible 600 maximum points or a perfect score at World Skills. He was also awarded the medal best of Nation for the USA.
Over four days of competition were held at this biennial World Skills Competition. Over 650 young people drawn from 39 member countries test themselves against tough international standards in 39 key trades and technologies. In addition there were 700 experts and associated delegates and thousands of industry, government and vocational education and training VIPs in attendance along with a record attendance of over 120,000 visitors to this spectacular event.
Stanley is the son of Joe and Laurie Stanley. His technical advisor is David Hartley and the American Welding Society is his sponsor. The American Welding Societies Foundation is providing Joel a $40,000 scholarship sponsored by Miller Electric Mfg. Co. Stanley is a member of SkillsUSA, the organization helping to coordinate the TeamUSA students' participation in the World Skills Competition.
