Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
July 9 to July 13, 2006
Nashville, Tennessee
July 17, 2006 - The National Leadership Conference for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America was held this past week in Nashville, Tennessee at the Grand Ole Opry Hotel and Convention Center. Students, parents, and educators from Maine attended this event. More than 5,000 students attended the conference from around the country, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
We received an award for having the largest membership increase for the North Atlantic Region which, in addition to the New England states, includes the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.
Two Maine students competed in STAR Events and won a gold medal for Chapter Service Project and Job Interview.
Peter Sprague, a senior this fall at Schenck High School in East Millinocket, was a candidate for National Office from the North Atlantic Region. His speech was outstanding. He missed the election by one point but he made those of us from Maine quite proud. Peter was the first student from Maine to run for a national office in many years.
In addition to competing in STAR Events, Maine students took part in Relay for Life and the entire organization raised more than $92,000 to contribute to Cancer Research.
The week offered workshops, exhibits and several general sessions.
A delegation from Maine is looking forward to attending Cluster Meeting this fall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
