Mission:

The mission of the Portland Street Academy is to assure that homeless youth have free access to an appropriate public education and training that will successfully meet their education and employment needs.  Some of the services that they supply are:

 

~Assistance in enrolling in school of choice or other educational programs within the community

~ Advocacy to reduce the barriers that homeless youth encounter while pursuing their educational goals

~ Coordination of travel

~ Preparation for the General Educational Development Exam (GED)

~ Support in job attainment, survival, and success

~ Career exploration and guidance

~ Planning for all aspects of college including; SAT prep, choosing a college, applications, financial aid, scholarships, and fee waivers

~Academic Assessment in Reading and Math

~Tutoring

~ Multi-sensory reading

~Photo Identification

Mission:


Tedford Housing works to end homelessness in Maine by providing, in collaboration with others, shelter, housing and services to those in need. We work to help people become more self-sufficient and advocate for change so that no one faces the prospect of being without a home.

Merrymeeting Project:

The Merrymeeting Project was started fourteen years ago to help homeless and at-risk young people. It is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered by the Maine Department of Education. Last year, it became a program of Tedford Housing
The Merrymeeting Project advocates for the educational rights of homeless youth (under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act). It is a collaboration between Tedford Housing and three school programs: RSU-1, Brunswick School Department, and SAD 75. For more information, contact Donna Verhoeven at (207)729-1161 x-103.

Mission:

The mission of Lewiston’s STEP program is to insure that academic supports are in place for all high school students experiencing homelessness. The program is designed to provide daily supports, academic programming, opportunities for examining post high school pursuits, and a means to eliminate barriers to high school life.  The liaison collaborates with over 50 other schools to assist students with remaining at their schools of origin or in assisting to make the school transition easier. 
Some of the provided services include:

  • Individualized assistance with academics
  • Equal access to educational opportunities
  • Academic assessments
  • Post high school planning
  • Ties to GED services
  • Ties for free housing
  • Transportation needs
  • Health and counseling connection
  • Community liaisons for work and program support
