The MARTI Project, as this initiative is known, combines a proven model of professional development with the statewide coverage of Maine’s adult education programs to provide citizens technical support on ways to utilize our expanding broadband capacity for education, economic development and personal enrichment. The state’s one hundred and seven adult education programs will be become local sources of broadband knowledge. Using resources developed by ConnectME Authority, adult educators will provide community presentations, workshops and coursework making 21 st Century skills available to all.
In exchange for providing these ConnectME programs, Maine Adult Education will expand the MARTI professional development model statewide. MARTI Professional Development
MARTI training began in 2008. Trainer/Mentors worked with educators in four adult education programs to explore how technology could be better integrated in adult education teaching and learning. As a result of the success of the pilot, the MARTI professional development (PD) project grew to serve educators in thirteen programs. Teaming with the ConnectME Authority and the State Planning Office Maine Adult Education was awarded a Broadband Infrastructure Grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. With the support of the grant the program is expanding to support educators in all adult education programs statewide! In exchange for this support, adult education programs agree to become local ConnectME locations for high speed broadband internet information. Initially, two adult educators from each program will be offered the training as well as two tutors from each Literacy Volunteer affiliate.
Adult education teachers in participating in the MARTI certification program will work with a team of ten highly experienced Trainer/Mentors . Each Trainer/Mentor, working with up to four programs, will facilitate online courses in Technology Integration for Teaching and Learning, and Differentiated Instruction and Universal Design for Learning. Teachers will be encouraged to develop professional learning communities with peers from across the state. The adult education program director is required to attend the initial regional meeting and to participate in the Technology Integration on-line course. The two-semester training program will be combined with regional meetings and one-on-one classroom visits by the Trainer/Mentor. Access to this and other training information will be available through the adult education professional development portal http://pdportal.maineadulted.org/ Courses will begin in September and January of each year through 2014. Adult educators will be awarded MARTI certification when they successfully complete a two-semester training program requiring attending at least one regional MARTI meeting, two classroom or teaching session visitations and successfully completing two online courses. MARTI Technology Integration is an eight-week online course covering everything from social networks to Open Educational Resources. The program was designed by the MARTI Trainer/Mentors based on experience from the previous MARTI programs. The final certification requirement is a Reflection and Evaluation, including a course review and plan on specifically how the teacher will integrate technology in the teaching and learning practice. Educators will be awarded 70 PD contact hours on successful completion of the MARTI program. The adult education program will receive support for participation of two teachers with a grant of $500 per teacher for paid in equal installments on successful completion of the each course. Space will be available for additional teachers to enroll in the MARTI certification program at no cost once all adult education programs have had the opportunity to have two teachers participate.
Adult educators wishing to enroll in the MARTI training must be first nominated by the director of the adult education program in which they teach. They will then complete the MARTI enrollment form and, when accepted, register for their classes through the Maine Adult Education PD Portal. Applications will be considered in the order in which they are received
