Unfinished Basement CeilingsNational Fire Protection Association's Standard 13D, (NFPA13D), systems require fire sprinkler coverage of occupied basements. These ceilings are often unfinished, with exposed joist construction. Formerly copper pipe or steel pipe had to be used for these areas, but in recent years the CPVC pipe became listed for these ceilings in NFPA 13D systems. Certain distance limitations apply as well as construction type, so verify the manufacturer's specifications.
