Welcome to Maine Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Maine EMS is a bureau within the Maine Department of Public Safety (DPS) established to be the central agency responsible for the coordination and integration of all state activities concerning Emergency Medical Services and the overall planning, evaluation, coordination, facilitation and regulation of EMS systems.

What's New

State Shutdown Days

6/26/09 - Budget legislation for the next biennium requires that all non-exempt executive branch state departments, agencies, and offices be closed for ten days in fiscal year 2009-2010 and ten days in fiscal year 2010-2011.  These dates are in addition to scheduled holiday closings.

As a result, Maine EMS will be closed on the following dates:

2009 Maine EMS Awards

6/05/09 - The 2009 Maine EMS System Awards presentation were held in the State House Hall of Flags on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 2:30 p.m.. 

The Maine EMS Awards are presented by the Maine EMS Board each year in May during EMS Week and are conferred upon those individuals or groups that have demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment to EMS in Maine.  Speakers at this years awards included Governor John Baldacci, Anne H. Jordan, Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, Brenda Harvey, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Jay Bradshaw, Maine EMS Director, and heart attack survivor Daniel Williams.

The 2009 Award recipients are:

GOVERNOR’S AWARD – Maine Health and Information Center

The Governor's Award is conferred to those who have made an exceptional contribution to the EMS system at the state, national, or system-wide level and who have demonstrated involvement and contributions in multiple areas of EMS activity (i.e., system development, education, administration, public education, quality/process improvement, etc.).

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – Chief Les Brown, Millinocket and Judith Wills, Carrabassett

The Lifetime Achievement Award is conferred to those who have had extensive involvement with EMS for at least 10 years, consistently performing above and beyond expectations in system development, patient care, service involvement, and/or community involvement.

EMS MERIT AWARD – Tiffany Stebbins, Oakland and Gary Gardner, Eagle Lake

The EMS Merit Award is conferred to those who have made an exceptional contribution to the EMS system at the local or regional level and who have demonstrated involvement and contribution in one or more areas of EMS activity.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION - Arlene Greenleaf, Bethel, Maine

HeartSafe Communities Recognition

The 2009 EMS Awards Ceremony once again recognized communities and EMS services that have achieved HeartSafe status.

The Maine Cardiovascular Health Program and the Maine EMS are partners in the HeartSafe program, designed to assist Maine cities and towns in improving the chances that anyone suffering a cardiovascular-related event will have the best possible chance for survival and recovery. HeartSafe awards are based upon a number of factors, including community education and availability of CPR and AEDs, pre-arrival emergency medical instructions provided by dispatchers, paramedic availability and advanced cardiac monitoring capabilities.

Recipients of the 2009 HeartSafe Awards are:

New Maine EMS Continuing Education Hour (CEH) Roster

A revised Continuing Education Hour (CEH) roster is now available in the CEH section of the Training Materials web page. The new roster must be used for all CEH programs conducted on or after September 10, 2008.

Revisions to the form have been made to help ensure that EMS providers receive the correct credit for the continuing education courses they attend. Click here to access the new forms.
