Highway Safety Grants

The following goals and objectives are part of Maine's plan to reduce deaths, injuries and property damage resulting from traffic crashes. The Bureau of Highway Safety addresses those highway safety problems that relate to the behavioral factors of drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other highway users. It documents, to the extent possible, the severity of identified problem areas.

Funds are allocated to these categories:

• Occupant Restraints (for adults and children);
• Traffic Records;
• Emergency Medical Services;
• Program Management;
• Pupil Transportation;
• Community Traffic Safety Programs;
• Youth Alcohol;
• Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety; and
• Traffic Engineering Services.

Within these categories, funds are dedicated to support training, public information and education, equipment acquisition, staff support and program administration. Funded projects can provide direct services and/or system improvements.
