Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS)

SBI manages Maine's fingerprint-based criminal history record database. AFIS contributes to the effectiveness of law enforcement, the employment of individuals for sensitive occupations, and the licensing process for certain privileges. Fingerprint cards are entered into the database and checked to see if the individual has an existing record. New arrestee fingerprint information is sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to be added to their database. This national database is only available to participating law enforcement agencies across the country. Individuals are allowed to request their own FBI record for review.

Identification Specialist II staff are responsible for processing all the fingerprint information SBI currently receives electronically and on Ten-Print hard cards. Processing includes:

• Verifying Accuracy and Completeness of Information
• Quality Control for Images
• Technical Searches for Identification purposes
• Database Storage when Retainable
• FBI Submissions
• Fingerprint Based Criminal History Inquiries
• Adding New Information to Existing Records
