Maine has 164 school administrative units that comprise 492 municipalities (Definitions). These school administrative units are served by 121 Superintendent of schools in 132 administrative offices. There are 33 administrative offices that serve more than one school administrative unit and 10 superintendents that serve more than one administrative office.

There are 741 schools in Maine: 623 public and 118 approved private.  According to Maine Statute, an Elementary school means that portion of a school that provides instruction in any combination of kindergarten through grade 8.  A Secondary school means that portion of a school that provides instruction in any combination of grades 9 through 12.  Listed below are totals in a variety of grade combinations. Please note that a school may be included in more than one grade combination, such as a K-12 school that would be counted in both the K-8 and 9-12 rows.
